About Our School:

In 1988, Mr. Clair opened the first
school in Cloverdale, BC, and called it Victory Taekwon Do.
The name was to express the nature of Taekwon Do, where students
are challenged with developing a new skill. Their personal character
is put to the test as we go through the struggle while being
forged into a new black belt and declaring Victory over their
own doubts and complacencies.
In 1992, Mr. Clair moved the school to Langley where it was
more centrally located, and more easily accessible. Mr. Clair
enjoyed teaching because it brought out the best in people.
He considers his students like an extended family. However,
the martial art schools in the lower mainland of BC became more
and more commercialized, driven by politics, power, and instructors
that just want to get rich quick.
Mr. Clair’s interests were for the love of
the art of Taekwon Do, not to get involved in what was happening.
In 1997, Mr. Clair decided to close Victory Taekwon Do. In 2002,
Mr. Clair relocated the school, in the Guildford area of Surrey
and renamed it Legacy Taekwon Do.
The school was opened at the Guildford Recreation Centre in Jan. 2002,
which is Surrey's biggest and most beautiful Rec centre ever built, with
plenty of activities. Mr. Clair called the club, "Legacy Taekwon Do" to honour
the late founder of Taekwon Do, General Choi Hong Hi.
By contacting with Surrey Parks & Recreation, we are able to offer Taekwon Do to kids and
families at an affordable rate. He is able to focus on using his skills and
experience towards teaching the students, while Surrey Parks and Recreation
takes care of student registrations.
The same is now being offered through the City of Langley Recreation starting in January of 2012.

Children’s Programs
We provide a safe and controlled environment
where your children can learn self defense,
co ordination, agility, and focusing skills. Our mental discipline
is based on our Taekwon Do Tenets: Courtesy; Integrity; Perseverance: Self Control; and
Indomitable Spirit. So your child will not only be equipped
to handle bullies, but he or she will develop every day motor
skills necessary in any sporting activity.
Taekwon Do is a defensive martial art. We
do not promote physical aggression, nor do we teach violence
as a way to resolve differences. Taekwon Do is designed to protect
ourselves against people who are violent. We recognize that
sometimes violent people will not give you the luxury of choice.
We hope that your child never has to face that situation. But
the reality is, that we can not always be there to protect them.
We focus on recognizing dangerous situations. then, avoiding
them at all costs. To use our smarts and talk our way out if
we can. But the last resource is self defense. But also to maintain
self discipline, and only use as much force as is necessary
to protect ourselves.
We do not employ any eastern religious concepts, but welcome
all people from all walks of life. Since Taekwon Do was developed
in the 20th century, it is based on scientific principles, and
not mysticisms.
We realize that in the today’s world, positive
role models are an important part of a child’s
life. Therefore, we have put emphasis on those core values in
our programs. Responsibility,
goal setting, and academic achievement are the corner stones to
our teaching. That is why we believe that students must earn their rank levels through hard
work and dedication. These are
the things that students should be recognized for. Although
there are some schools that will
give away belts, simply for participation. Students must learn
to overcome their challenges
in life, and not just give up when confronted with difficulty.
Therefore, Taekwon Do also
teaches children to develop the mental strength to conquer the
challenges that they will
no doubt face in their future.
We have divided our courses into 3 distinct
levels of training:
Level 1
An introduction to Taekwon Do basics. If your
child is between Grades 2 – 7, and has no
previous experience in Taekwon Do, this is where to start. All
students in this class are White Belts only, so that we can be focused on their needs only
as the student first learns to walk in Taekwon Do.
Level 2
This is an intermediate level for children
in grades 2-7. If your children is at least a yellow belt to
Green Belt ( w/ Blue Stripe ), this is the class to signup for.
If your children has achieved a colour belt in another school,
he/she will have to be assessed first before determining what
program is appropriate for them. Unless we have been educated
in Taekwon Do, it is easy to assume that each Taekwon Do school
is the same. Although it should be, however, there are many
martial arts schools that use the name “Taekwon Do” because
it is so popular. The only ‘real Taekwon Do’ comes from the
person that created it. Gen. Choi Hong Hi
Level 3
This is for advanced students only from grades
2-7. If your child is at least Blue Belt or higher, then this
is the course to sign up for. Here we will learn advanced techniques;
leadership; self defense; and multiple opponent situations.
Leadership Program
A student who is at least Red Belt or higher,
may volunteer for leadership. Here, the student is able to share
their knowledge and experience, and to be a big brother or sister
to lower belt students, who are faced with the challenges that
the leadership member has already overcome. The student will
take charge of small groups of students, or individuals ( at
first ), and also learn to lead class warm up routines. Not
only does this raise their confidence in public speaking, but
enables them to be a positive role model for the other students.
The program will help to fortify the depth of knowledge and
understanding in their own techniques.
Youth and Adult Programs
At Legacy Taekwon Do, we provide a fun, safe,
and controlled environment to learn self defense. It is designed
for those who are serious about their goals, and are able to
remained focused on there tasks. No experience is needed to
get started, Taekwon Do is designed for everyone. It includes
those that are young or old; male or female; in good shape or
not so good shape. People are taking Taekwon Do for many reasons:
Self Defense; physical fitness/health; co ordination; motor
skill development; sport; or for the art. Taekwon Do has something
for everyone, you do not have to be a world class athlete.
Our members and instructors are kind, and
friendly people that care about one another. They are very helpful
and courteous. It is a great place to get in shape, make new
friends, and develop new skills. At the Guildford Main Gym,
all classes are taught by Chief Instructor Peter Clair.
We have split the classes into 2 groups. Level
1 is for the beginner and intermediate students. While level
2 is reserved for the advanced students. This way, the beginner
can enjoy the comfort of learning at their own pace, and we
are able to be more focused on their needs in getting started.
Here, we also have assistant instructors to help you on a one
on one basis.
Legacy Taekwon Do is located inside the Guildford Recreation
Centre and the Cloverdale Rec. Centre, and is a Surrey Parks
and Recreation Program. So, it is always affordable. You can
expect to pay on average, 3 times less than lessons at a privately
owned studio.
